In the campaign launched today (03/08/2020) it is suggested that like the ban on smoking advertisements, we now know enough about the harm done by sports utility vehicles and that a ban should be placed on advertising these vehicles.
Adverts for large cars, air travel or fossil fuels are particularly bad for the environment given the high levels of carbon emissions they are responsible for. Research shows there is a link between advertising and higher levels of consumption. None of us are immune to the adverts that we are exposed to. Therefore, high-carbon advertising plays an important role in the climate crisis by promoting harmful consumer habits.
The campaign features a petition "calling on the Department for Media, Culture and Sport to end advertising for climate-wrecking SUVs". A report, Upselling Smoke, that has been released alongside the campaign found that that:
