Major highway works have completed to the north of Portsmouth including a new junction and park and ride scheme on the M275 at Tipner and a bridge replacement scheme on the Northern Road at nearby Cosham.
Taken together the two projects are valued at £40M and were opened by Transport Minister Baroness Kramer last Thursday. Department for Transport provided around three quarters of the funding with the balance paid by Portsmouth City Council.
Tipner’s scheme involved building new slip roads from an elevated section of the motorway down to a 660 space car park and park and ride station.
A dedicated bus lane has also been created beside the motorway for a length of 1.2km towards the city centre in an effort to encourage motorists to make use of the park and ride and reduce congestion. The project was constructed by a VolkerFitzpatrick / Colas joint venture.
The North Road bridge replacement scheme was completed by contractor Osborne after the existing structure over a railway line required urgent replacement.
Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: “This investment will help support local jobs and businesses and boost Portsmouth’s competitiveness as well as helping make transport in the area greener and more sustainable.”
Portsmouth City Council's cabinet member for traffic and transport Jason Fazackarley said: “Completion of the Northern Road bridge and the M275 junction and park and ride are major landmarks for Portsmouth and our overall regeneration vision for the city.”
