Six routes have been identified that could accommodate tram-trains towards Glossop and Marple, Warrington via Carrington, Hazel Grove, Stalybridge and a pair of lines to Stockport. Some services could start operating within five years.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling lent his support to the tram-train plan at an event on Friday. The UK’s first such scheme opened in Sheffield last October.
“A Greater Manchester tram-train has the potential to seamlessly integrate our existing rail and tram tracks and services,” Chris Grayling said. “We will work closely to explore proposals which would see Transport for Greater Manchester running more services.”
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham added: “We are a growing city region but our transport network and infrastructure is holding us back. Bringing tram-train to Greater Manchester is a key part of our vision. I’m pleased that the Government supports this ambition.”
Manchester’s Metrolink currently features seven lines and 93 stops and extends for around 96km. Forty million passengers use the network every year. Work continues to build a new Trafford Park line, which is set to complete next year. In the longer term, tunnels under the city are being explored to feature metro style services.
Sheffield’s tram-train service opened on 25 October, between the city’s Cathedral tram station and Rotherham Parkgate. The vehicles run on tram lines for part of the route before switching onto national rail routes.
But the cost of creating the tram-train network increased from £19M to £75M and the project was delayed by nearly three years.
