The start of 2026 has seen a significant wave of policy, legislative and sector developments shaping the future of transport, infrastructure and planning across the UK.

From the Planning and Infrastructure Act receiving Royal Assent, the publication of the Climate Adaptation Strategy for Transport, new powers confirmed to tackle pavement parking, new transparency measures introduced for local highways authority maintenance funding, to the launch of Great Britain’s first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade, the UK Government has set out clear focus on transport and infrastructure and ambitions for growth, resilience, safety and integration.

Alongside these government announcements, CIHT members have been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours, CIHT has been invited to present oral evidence to the Transport Committee at the end of January, CIHT policy recommendations have been echoed in Department for Transport (DfT) publications, and CIHT has received a letter from the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander MP, commending CIHT on its valuable contributions and collaboration with the DfT.

These developments and synergies between the UK Government and CIHT reinforce the relationship between the institution and the UK Government and affirm the institution’s role in shaping national transport policy and supporting delivery of a safer, more inclusive and resilient transport network.

CIHT looks forward to what else 2026 has in store for transport and infrastructure.
