Radical plans to tackle the disruption caused by road works were discussed at a summit hosted by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan, as he also announced tough new powers to beat the problem in London.

Sadiq Khan called on councils in all the country’s major cities to work with the Government to crack down on companies who fail to complete works on key routes on time, including considering higher daily charges as a penalty for overrunning. The current maximum daily charge is £2,500, but to encourage companies to complete works on time increases to as much as £25,000 may be justified.

Sadiq Khan said:
“Everyone understands that road works can be necessary but the disruption being caused, and the constant inconvenience to the travelling public, is way beyond what is acceptable."
