The Transport Select Committee is launching an inquiry into local roads funding and governance. Local roads in England comprise over 97% of the total road network length and carry two-thirds of motor traffic and almost all cyclist movements.
As part of shaping our response to the inquiry, CIHT held the ‘Future of Local Road Funding and Governance’ roundtable to discuss these issues on Wednesday 12 September in our Britannia Walk, London offices. Key industry stakeholders who attended included the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA); the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE); the Local Government Technical Advisers Group (LGTAG) and the Local Government Association (LGA). Participants addressed the ongoing struggles of our industry to ensure proper road maintenance with declining resources. There was recognition that bold steps need to be taken to ensure the industry can deliver for customers. The deadline for submitting written evidence is Tuesday 2 October.
The Active Travel Inquiry announced on Thursday 9 August gives transport planners, highway engineers and urban designers the opportunity to submit written evidence of positive changes that can enable every day journeys by foot and bike.
We will be providing responses to both these consultations. If you would like to get involved or to find our more, please contact e: technical@ciht.org.uk
