CIHT welcomes the announcement made by the Prime Minister and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial strategy and the Department of Transport earlier today of a new £1.7bn Transforming Cities fund, that will focus on addressing weaknesses in city transport systems and will fund new local transport links. Whilst the full detail of the fund hasn’t been released it appears to focus on supporting projects which will improve connectivity, reduce congestion and introduce new mobility services and technology.
Also announced were four Grand challenges that will be announced in an Industrial strategy white paper which reflect global trends that will shape the future. These are artificial intelligence and the data economy; clean growth; healthy ageing; and the future of mobility.
Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive has said:
“Whilst we await the details of the fund and of the new industrial strategy it’s clear that Transport has a key role in improving our economy and setting the direction of the UK’s industrial strategy.”
“CIHT members will have a role in addressing all the Grand Challenges and delivering the outputs of the Transforming Cities fund and we will continue to work with government to demonstrate the value our sector brings to the UK.”
