BAM Nuttall has been appointed as main contractor by Network Rail for the 48km long Borders Railway. The £220M design and construct deal is expected to create 500 jobs. The new line is scheduled to open in 2015 and will re-establish a passenger rail link for the first time in over 40 years from Edinburgh through Midlothian to Tweedbank. Passengers will be able to travel direct from the Scottish capital in under an hour and the route is expected to take traffic off the congested local road network.
Balfour Beatty has been selected as preferred bidder for all of Suffolk County Council’s work worth £200M over five years and with a possible extension of the deal to 10 years. The deal which starts on 1 April 2013 includes promises of £2M savings in 2013-14 and to contribute to the local economy by using local companies. Around 200 Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Borough Council staff will be transferred to the contractor’s Balfour Beatty Living Places division under TUPE rules.
Welsh Transport Minister Carl Sargeant has confirmed that an additional £3M will be spent on maintenance and particularly drainage over the next three months to improved resilience of the trunk road network in North Wales with a particular focus on the A55. The move follows recent closure of the A55 due to flooding. This comes on top of increased spending on drainage maintenance in North Wales of £1.16M in 2011/12 and £0.65M in this financial year.
