130710_Greenwich_224A new University Technical College in Greenwich has received delivery of a decommissioned underground carriage ahead of the college’s opening in September.

The former Hammersmith & City line carriage had been in service for over 35 years and was lowered onto 30m of track at the college laid by apprentices.

Students will learn how to design and make modifications to the carriages which can then be fitted and tested on the train carriage to demonstrate fitness for purpose.

They will also learn about basic engineering principles of design, including electrical, pneumatic, mechanical and electronic systems. Transport for London will offer technical demonstrations and support the curriculum for the first wave of students.

“Having a Tube carriage on site will mean that students get to have real hands on experience and understand the engineering behind one of London's iconic features,” said Transport for London’s director of human resources Tricia Riley.

The University of Greenwich’s deputy vice chancellor of research and enterprise Tom Barnes added: “The delivery of the train marks an important milestone in the development of the Royal Greenwich UTC.”

The Royal Greenwich University Technical College is a new regional academy for students aged 14 to 19. It will teach technical qualifications focusing on engineering, construction and related industries alongside core academic subjects for GCSEs and A Levels.

Eleven other University Technical Colleges are set to open in September, taking the total number of UTCs around the country to 17. Another 45 are currently being developed.
