Cyclists are now able to take their non-folding bicycles on part of the Tyne & Wear Metro network following launch of a trial earlier this week.

The trial – which will be in place on weekdays for up to six months – allows customers to travel with their bikes between Callerton Parkway near Newcastle Airport and Jesmond, north of the city centre, from 10am to 3pm.

“This trial will enable us to establish if we can safely and comfortably accommodate bikes on the Metro,” said network operator DB Regio Tyne & Wear’s customer service director Paul Walker.

“We know this is an issue passengers can have very different and strong views on, so we are asking the question with a trial in one area when the Metro is less busy, and we’ll be following what happens carefully.”

One bike will be allowed per carriage. It is hoped that the trial will enhance the use of bicycles and support onward travel for cyclists in the region.

Charity Cycling UK – formerly known as CTC – welcomed the launch of the trial. Head of communications and campaigns David Murray said: “Initiatives like this can help make cycling a more convenient option for people, allowing it to be integrated into longer trips.

“This could lead to more people taking up cycling in the region which is positive for health, the economy and the environment. Hopefully the trial is successful and can be expanded cover other areas and other times of the day.”
