The UK Government has today (2 Sept) confirmed how much funding each local authority across England will be receiving under the Local Transport Grant (LTG).
The funding boost will see significant uplifts for the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands and West Midlands. The grant will enable councils to develop detailed plans for local schemes that have the greatest impact in their areas.
The Local Transport Grant (LTG) is a consolidated grant for local transport enhancements and maintenance. It replaces the Integrated Transport Block (ITB) and comprises both capital and resource funding from 2026 to 2027 onwards.
The Local Transport Grant allocations are available to read here.
The total £104 million LTG allocation forms part of the government’s commitment of £2.2 billion, providing councils with multi-year funding certainty to improve transport in their communities.
CIHT has previously urged the government to act now and harness the potential opportunity for savings and reinvestment that long term funding settlements provide.
The case for moving away from this type of annual funding cycle for infrastructure renewal and enhancement has already been accepted in other parts of the transport system. National Highways, managing the SRN, and Network Rail are already benefiting from longer-term funding arrangements.
Funding will also ensure councils can manage the delivery of projects that improve essential services across towns and rural areas, delivering the UK Government’s Plan for Change.
Mayoral strategic authorities who are eligible for City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) or TCR do not receive these funding streams.
CIHT looks forward to continuing to work with the UK Government, the Department for Transport, and local authorities to deliver enhancements, improvements, and maintenance of the UK’s transport network.
