Plans to upgrade the Brighton Main Line through Croydon to remove a significant bottleneck have moved a step closer after the Government confirmed funding to develop the project.

The investment allows Network Rail to deliver the ‘GRIP’ design stages of its Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme, which includes an expanded East Croydon station, extra tracks and flyover junctions.

This represents the central element of the Brighton Main Line upgrade programme to improve punctuality between London, Gatwick and the Sussex coast, with the potential for more frequent services in the longer term.

“Redeveloping the railway through Croydon is the only practical way to further improve the reliability of services on the Brighton Main Line,” said Network Rail’s south east route managing director John Halsall.

“The Croydon bottleneck is now the single biggest cause of congestion and delays to passengers on this vital rail artery and means that the railway is now effectively full at the busiest times of day.”

Several routes to and from central London converge in Croydon, creating the bottleneck. Network Rail’s upgrade programme would see the construction of a series of new grade separated junctions north of East Croydon station to alleviate current congestion.

The new funding from the Department for Transport means that Network Rail can now work up detailed designs for the track and station work in the Croydon area and produce an outline business case.

It will also carry out a full public consultation so that the local community and the travelling public are able to have their say on the designs.
