Dr George Gillespie has some 30 years’ international experience in the automotive and marine sectors.  He joined MIRA in 2009 as CEO, growing the business internationally and leading its sale in 2015 to HORIBA Japan.  He is now President of HORIBA’s automotive division and a Senior Corporate Officer of HORIBA Ltd, Japan.  HORIBA MIRA is one of the leading global providers of engineering, research, development and testing services to the automotive industry.

In addition to his work as head of the company’s Automotive Test Systems division, Dr Gillespie previously chaired the Intelligent Connected Vehicles Group  within the Automotive Council from 2014-2018, leading activities related to intelligent and connected vehicles.  He has a PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast, for research into low emission engines. 

He is a member of the WEF Global Autonomous Urban Mobility Council.  He has previously served as a Board Member of both the Coventry & Warwickshire LEP and the Leicestershire LEPs.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) represents more than 800 automotive companies in the UK.  The UK’s automotive industry topics range from: European and international trade, to safety, to environment, sustainability, and emissions challenges, to a fast-paced technology and innovation landscape and digital manufacturing to name a few.  

George will explore at the CIHT Conference the rapid changes in on vehicle technology and consequential impacts on enabling infrastructure.  He will outline the need for sectors to work in a unified and coherent manner to influence and shape government policy and interventions.

Conference delegates will therefore be able to hear a truly unique perspective (among others):

  • how the sector is preparing for the transition to low carbon vehicles;
  • how the whole technology landscape is rapidly evolving with automotive driving systems;
  • what are the implications for enabling infrastructure for automotive vehicles – both in the UK and internationally;
  • how the industry is gearing up to meet the Government’s recent announcement to bring forward the ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles to 2035.
