Visitors and exhibitors to the Traffex show last week reported an enjoyable, fruitful event. Here are Transportation Professional Weekly News's top three highlights:
1. Anyone working on free flow tolling of tunnels and wondering how best to check for over height vehicles could find the help they need at sensor intelligence business Sick. The firm's TIC102 laser measurement system offers real time vehicle profiling and classification for free flowing or stop-go traffic. As well as providing collection data for tolls, it can be used for monitoring vehicle speeds, dimensions and intervals even with rapid lane changing behaviour. Sick's lasers can also detect over heated axles or exhausts on HGVs which may catch light so the vehicles can be pulled over before they enter a tunnel. More information from paul.mckenna@sick.co.uk
2. The 2020 Consultancy is providing advice to councils on how to set up successful 20MPH zones in towns and cities. The business has been set up by Adam Bunce and builds on his experience of helping implement Portsmouth's 20MPH zone. If you want to understand what works and what doesn't and the ins and outs of the safety statistics, Adam could be your man. Contact adambunce@2020consultancy.co.uk
3. Tilon Composites business development manager Steve Barnes was prowling the Traffex aisles keeping an eye on the floor tiles. Because straight after the show they were going off to be recycled by his company to help make motorway noise barriers. Tilon's Tenbar system is an alternative to traditional timber fence and is lighter and less labour and plant intensive during installation. Carpet is combined with recycled plastic and fibreglass to create the barriers so the product gets good marks for sustainability and also reduced maintenance requirements. You can see the barriers on the M4/M5 managed motorway scheme near Bristol where they have been put in by Balfour Beatty. For details, contact steven.barnes@tilon.co.uk.
