Economic competitiveness of South West Wales is set to be enhanced following opening of a £68M highway improvement on the A477.

The scheme between St Clears and Red Roses to the west of Carmarthen was opened by Welsh Transport Minister Edwina Hart last week. 

The new road will improve journey times along the route towards Pembroke Dock and forms an important enhancement of the Trans European Road Network linking west Wales to the continent.

Completion of the road is welcomed by South Wales Chamber of Commerce director Graham Morgan who said the scheme will ease traffic flows for the benefit of businesses and help make south Pembrokeshire a more attractive destination for tourists.

Milford Haven port director Mark Andrews – who is also responsible for Pembroke Port – said: “The road improvement will reduce the transit time to the port, making the journey less arduous for people, and may make the area more attractive for developers.”

Edwina Hart said at the road opening: “Improving our transport infrastructure is crucial to the economic competitiveness of Wales. This project also brings many other benefits to road users and local people by improving road safety, creating bypasses for local villages and providing new walking and cycling routes.”

The new section of road is nearly 9km long and over half of its length carries three lanes offering opportunities for overtaking in both directions. Seventeen structures have been built including bridges and underpasses.
