The Interim Report of the Review of the Resilience of England's Transport Systems to Severe Winter Weather has been published today.  This report makes recommendations for improving national preparedness for severe weather in time for the 2010/11 winter season, covering:

    *    road salt supplies;
    *    highway authorities' winter service - both planning and execution;
    *    authoritative review of current technical standards for salt utilisation;
    *    the availability and accuracy of weather forecasts;
    *    guidance to the public on self-help.

The Report can be found here

The Independent Review Panel of Brian Smith, Chris Green and I would like to thank all those who provided evidence for the review.  We have only been able to get to grips so quickly with the subject matter because of the representations made by so many witnesses.

The Review's Final Report will be published in the autumn and will consider the resilience of railways and aviation, the economics of winter resilience, communications with the public and the longer-term reshaping of the road salt supply chain.
