The Department for Transport have today released the Working Together to Build a Safer Road System – British Road Safety Statement.
The statement sets out a number of priorities and actions to cover road safety policy as governed by the Department for Transport within Britain.
Actions include:
• Learner drivers will be offered the opportunity to take motorway driving lessons;
• Funding for police forces in England and Wales to target drug drivers;
• £50 million grant over 4 years to support Bikeability cycle training in schools;
• Increased fines and penalty points for driving whilst using hand held mobile phones.
The Government intend to run a series of consultations on specific road safety issues including:
• changes to improve cycle safety to ensure sideguards are not removed from HGVs;
• Proposals for safer motorcycling including strengthening of Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) for learner motorcyclists
There will also be a £2 million research programme launched to identify the best possible driver education, training and behaviour-change interventions for learner and novice drivers.
