How do I find out about volunteering opportunities?

Take a look at the 'Get involved' pages of the website which will direct you to further information on roles based on areas of interest.

Or get in touch with your local Regional Engagement Officer. They will be able to discuss what you could get involved in locally.

How much time will I need to give?

There are a great variety of roles available at CIHT, some of which need more of a time commitment than others.

You could get involved in a Regional Committee. This is about 4 or 5 days of volunteering a year. These enable you to get involved in your nation or region and as an regional committee member you can focus on your areas of interest. It might be planning CPD events or being on an awards judging panel.

If you don't want to join a committee, or don't have the time, don't worry. There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with.

How can I volunteer around my job?

Your employer may support volunteering as CPD, offer dedicated volunteering days, or allow flexible working to help you fit it in.

How do I speak to my employer about volunteering?

We would recommend talking to your employer and promoting the benefits that both parties will gain. Your employer might recognise volunteering as personal development and a CPD opportunity or have a policy on providing employee volunteering days that you could use.

What training will I get?

You will get the training and support required to undertake your role. All new volunteers are invited to undergo a Volunteer induction programme and we are currently developing our wider training offer for volunteers.

Short of time?

If you’re not able to sign up to a regular commitment as part of a committee there are still activities you could get involved in that don’t take up lots of time.

Write a blog – Share your experience of your area of expertise with other CIHT members through a blog.

Events – Our events sometimes need an extra pair of hands to run smoothly on the day. So, even if you’ve not got time to plan and organise the event, let your region or nation contact know that you’re happy to help. They’ll be happy to hear from you.

Be a speaker – you could be a speaker for one of our CPD webinars or conferences

Participate in a focus group – we are always eager to hear the views of our members and you could participate in short focus groups on key issues of interest to the wider membership.

STEM Ambassadors – Do you love your job and think you could inspire young people to consider planning as a future career choice? As a CIHT STEM Ambassador, you are required to undertake a minimum of one activity each year. This could be a 10-minute video about who you are and how your work makes a difference, a classroom visit, or even a professional development session for teachers. You are asked to make an initial commitment of three years – so that's just three activities – although you are welcome to renew that commitment when the time comes.
