With the UK government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan expected imminently and preparations for this November’s UN climate conference in Glasgow this November well advanced, Net Zero is a high priority for transportation professionals.

In response, CIHT’s Route to Net Zero project is working to identify where the Institution needs to take a lead to support the profession play its full role in the transition to low carbon mobility.

The project’s Advisory Group, Chaired by ex Committee for Climate Change Vice Chair Baroness Brown of Cambridge met for the first time on 16 April. Other members are Eurovia CEO Scott Wardrap, CIHT Trustee Lynn Basford, Arup Associate Director Susan Claris, Prof Glenn Lyons of Mott MacDonald and the University of the West of England, behavioural change expert Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh and Friends of the Earth’s Mike Childs.

Andrew Crudgington, CIHT’s new Climate Change Associate has now begun a phase of intense engagement with organisations from across the sector to get a better understanding of where CIHT has most to contribute to accelerate the shift to net zero. Some of the areas already emerging include helping members rapidly upgrade their skills, removing barriers to introducing low carbon materials and practices, supporting the incorporation of carbon intensity into strategic planning, and helping organisations establish baselines of their carbon performance against which they can measure progress.

Later in the Summer we will be giving all CIHT members a chance to comment on the project’s draft proposals but in the meantime if you’d like to know more or contribute views, contact andrew.crudginton@ciht.org.uk.
