You will take on the key role of quality assurance for the huge number and variety of ongoing and upcoming highways projects in Salford. Your expertise in carrying out planned and reactive inspections will help ensure the successful delivery of key schemes.

Your role

  • Provide quality assurance on Highway construction projects in Salford.
  • Monitor, inspect and oversee works on site on behalf of the Highway Design Team.
  • Meet with other members of the Highway Design team on site to jointly inspect the works.
  • Ensure compliance to the technical specification of major and minor Highway works delivered by both the in-house design team and external developers.
  • Assist in the effective delivery of the Highways Capital Programme.
  • Assist the NEC Project Manager in making contractual assessments and decisions, such as on the value of Compensation Events.
  • Provide a high-level of technical expertise to advise/inform/control contractors’ operations.
  • Ensure that works are being carried out safely in line with legislative requirements and best practice.
  • Record site progress to inform accurate monitoring of programme and budget.
  • Support, advise and mentor Highway Design team staff.
  • Represent Salford City Council to a high standard in negotiations and discussions with key stakeholders, such as local businesses and Transport for Greater Manchester.

Your profile

  • Qualified Clerk of Works/Civils Inspector.
  • Extensive site-based experience of Civil Engineering construction with a proven record as a Clerk of Works.
  • Ability to work independently across multiple site locations in an organised and effective manner.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current design standards, guidance and best construction practice.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Specification for Highway Works (SHW), Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW), Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), along with the relevant British Standards, Local Transport Notes, Approved Codes of Practice and industry guidance.
  • Excellent understanding of construction health and safety law, safe systems of work and approved methodologies and other applicable legislation.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure construction site environment, with confidence in making difficult decisions with financial implications.
  • Commercial awareness including detailed knowledge of the NEC4 Engineering & Construction Contract (ECC).
  • Full UK driving licence.
