This webinar provides the opportunity to hear from the Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE) team about the ‘living laboratory’ within the Highlands and Islands to trial new aviation technologies. Their work includes use cases with the NHS, NatureScot, Orkney Food and Drink, Streamline Shipping and Royal Mail, supported by Orkney, Shetland, Western Isles and Highland Councils.
The work of SATE is at the forefront in progressing both the UK and Scottish government’s aviation aspirations and has already delivered new airport infrastructure and demonstrated hybrid-electric aircraft and autonomous logistics.
Led by the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS), the Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE) started in November 2020 and established the UK’s first low-carbon aviation test centre, based at Kirkwall Airport on Orkney.
SATE has since evolved to become a regional asset for the Highlands & Islands, offering an environment that attracts world leading sustainable aviation technologies, and has allowed the region to be the host for several ground-breaking trials.
SATE is part-funded by the UKRI Future Flight Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK and the Economic and Social Research Council. It brings together a national consortium of industry partners, public sector bodies and academia which work with a range of regional businesses and stakeholders to apply state-of-the-art aviation technology to deliver targeted economic growth.
