The A1 Leeming to Barton scheme has created a continuous motorway-standard route between London and Newcastle. The journey time savings and safety improvements delivered through this project demonstrate the regional significance of the project not just in the highways sector but also supporting economic growth in the region and the Northern Powerhouse agenda. The scheme concludes a series of motorway upgrades of the A1 between Darrington and Barton over the last 40 years.
