Professor Phil Blythe is Professor of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) at Newcastle University. Prior to joining the Department for Transport he was Director of the Transport Operations Research Group for 13 years.
Phil’s academic focus has been the development of ITS – the use of information, communications and computing technology applied to transport. His research portfolio covers a wide range of areas where ITS has been applied to transport including: road to vehicle communications; road user charging systems; ITS for assistive mobility, smartcards and radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless / smartdust technologies, electromobility and future intelligent infrastructure.
His research is also forward-looking and attempts to bridge the technology-policy gap in terms of what technologies may evolve to meet future policy objectives or influence future policy thinking to meet the challenges.
Phil chairs the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET)’s Transport Policy Panel, is a member of their Lectures Committee and supports the IET in the UK and abroad in areas such intelligent transport, connected and autonomous vehicles, electro-mobility and smart cities and on the Big Data / Internet of Things agendas. In March 2012 Phil was awarded the Reece-Hills Medal for a lifetime personal contribution to ITS.

Broadly, her current research direction investigates ‘the future of the car’ – bringing together socio-technical developments including electrification, new mobility services and the psychology of car owning and driving to explore the concept of ‘car usership’ to assess the potential impact of these on the energy system. She has led large interdisciplinary research teams and projects mainly funded by UK Research Councils (RCUK), the Energy Technologies Institute, the UK Department for Transport, Scottish Government and the European Union. She has sat on a number of advisory boards and strategy panels for UK Government Departments, the Climate Change Committee, US Dept. of Energy, HoL Science and Tech Committee, RCUK and NGOs, including currently acting as Chair to the Research and Evidence Group for the Scottish National Transport Strategy Review.

Peter started his career as a trainee Civil Engineering Technician and has always supported CIHT since he became a member in 2004, and proud to become a Fellow in 2018 and an elected CIHT council member and trustee in 2019. CIHT has done a great job raising the profile of our industry and being an advocate for the excellent professionalism of its members. He believes it is now time to build on this substantive work, to broaden its membership, and to challenge and promote the industry and the transformational aspects of our work, which often goes unnoticed. We need to be seen as enablers of economic growth, improving opportunities for all, and leaders in the environmental sustainability. The work we do can transform people’s lives.
