According to the Independent, Chancellor Rishi Sunak stated that just £1.5 billion of the £7 billion earmarked for transportation upgrades has yet to be disbursed.
When challenged about the precise amount of investment that would come from fresh money, Sunak indicated on Trevor Phillips on Sunday this morning that the government "topped that up by £1.5 billion."
When it comes to rail projects, Sunak has not yet said if the eastern section of HS2 would be funded by the government. He also refused to confirm whether or not the Northern Powerhouse Rail, which would connect Manchester and Leeds, will be constructed.
The Northern Powerhouse Rail, a "major strategic rail programme" to promote the North's economy, will concentrate on modernising railway lines, decreasing trip times, and increasing the number of trains per hour.
“This transformational Northern Powerhouse Rail project will connect our towns and cities like never before, giving confidence to investors, as well as being at the heart of our decarbonisation strategy,” said Martin Tugwell Transport for the North’s chief executive and Immediate Past President at CIHT.
