Why the Review: Apprenticeships require periodic revisions to stay current and effective. The Civil Engineering degree apprenticeship is undergoing a significant overhaul to align with modern practices. Triggered by a request from the Department for Education and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), the existing apprenticeships in civil engineering are being updated to better match current demands. The review is being led by the Technical Apprenticeship Consortium which CIHT is a member of.

What's Changing: One of the significant changes is the merger of the Civil Engineering Design and Site Management apprenticeships into a single Civil Engineer apprenticeship at Level 6. This streamlined approach aims to simplify choices for employers, eliminate barriers for apprentices, and facilitate broader career paths. This change is also designed to provide progression from existing Level 3 and Level 4 civil engineering apprenticeships.

The Importance of Your Feedback: Your expertise and perspective are crucial in this process. The CIHT encourages all members in England who are involved in recruiting or supporting apprentices to review the proposed changes and share your feedback. These drafts have been structured to meet current government and professional institution requirements, including sustainability, safety, and well-being considerations.

Consultation Details: The consultation will be open from August 25th to September 28th, 2023. Your feedback should be submitted using the feedback form which gives more details of the proposed changes and asks you for your views. This is an opportunity to influence the future of civil engineering apprenticeships and ensure they align with the evolving needs of the industry.

Next Steps: Following the consultation, revisions will be made based on your feedback and will be submitted for approval by IfATE in October 2023. This process aims to finalize the new apprenticeship standards for delivery by January 2025.
