Professor Glenn Lyons announced his work on a FUTURES toolkit aimed at helping national and local governments, transport operators and developers, tackle the challenges transport bring. He described how by embracing new techniques the highways and transportation sector can untangle travel demand uncertainty and make wiser investments.

He was accompanied by Stephen Cragg, Senior Transport Planner at Transport Scotland who has been using these new techniques in the ongoing update of Scotland's National Transport Strategy and Lynn Basford, chartered town planner and transport planner who has been implementing them in a major new development.
Quoting the French philosopher Voltaire who reportedly said over 200 years ago, “Uncertainty is an uncomfortable position. But certainty is an absurd one" they set a challenge for the sector to finally end the predict and provide model, to something based on deciding and providing for the places we want to build and live in.

Glenn is currently a trustee of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, as well as chair of its Membership and Skills Strategy Board. He is also a member of the Department for Transport’s Joint Analysis Development Panel, the RAC Foundation’s Research Advisory Group and a trustee of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund.
