The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has launched a new call for evidence to help shape a future strategy for built environment professions, trades and occupations, with the government planning to publish a long-term strategy in Spring 2027. The call for evidence seeks insight into skills, behaviours, accountability and wider system challenges across the sector in England.
CIHT will be responding to the consultation and is encouraging members to share their views and experiences to help inform the Institution’s submission.
The call for evidence forms part of wider government reforms intended to strengthen the built environment sector and support safer, higher-performing and more sustainable places and buildings. The Government has stated that the strategy will support a vision where individuals and organisations can thrive while delivering in the interests of current and future users of the built environment.
The consultation is broad in scope and seeks evidence from across the full building lifecycle. It includes themes covering:
It also explores key themes such as skills and knowledge, behaviours and culture, accountability and responsibility, and opportunities for future improvement.
The Government is seeking evidence not only from those working directly in professions and trades, but also from clients, education providers, manufacturers, professional bodies and organisations working across related sectors.
For CIHT, the consultation provides an important opportunity to highlight the contribution of transport infrastructure professionals and to ensure the views of highways and transportation practitioners are reflected within wider built environment reform discussions.
The Institution is particularly keen to understand members’ perspectives on issues including workforce skills, professional development, competence, culture, cross-sector collaboration and the future needs of the transport infrastructure profession.
The call for evidence runs until 12 August 2026. Responses received will help inform the development of the government’s strategy and future proposals for reform.
We are concentrating our response on the questions which are most relevant to our members. Members who would like to contribute views to support CIHT’s response are invited to complete this form by close of play 10 July 2026. If you have any queries, please contact technical@ciht.org.uk.

As part of their ongoing programme of engagement, the MHCLG is hosting two webinars later this month. These will provide an introduction to the strategy and the purpose, structure and content of the consultation.
The webinars are open to the public, and anyone is welcome to sign-up using the links below. Both sessions will cover the same information, so individuals are invited to attend one session:
