In the latest of 30 initiatives to strengthen the road haulage industry and encourage even more individuals to return to the trade, a comprehensive study will attempt to enhance mandatory continuous training for HGV and bus drivers.

Every five years, drivers must complete five days of periodic training to ensure that they are fully trained to operate heavy goods trucks and buses professionally and in accordance with current road safety requirements.

This training is a European Union effort that is mandatory under the Driver Certificates of Professional Competence (DCPC) regime.

While the goal is to maintain high standards, some drivers are left to pay for their own training and are not paid while doing it. According to industry feedback, this deters many former drivers from returning to the industry.

As the government works to build supply chains and address the worldwide driver shortage here in the UK, the review will look at how the procedure may be improved to lessen the load on drivers – both returning and new – and ensure it does not operate as a barrier to working in the industry.

The government is working with key partners to identify a number of lorry parks throughout the nation where short-term services like as temporary toilets, showers, and food may be given in the coming months, in order to entice more workers back into the industry and attract new recruits.

The government has also said that it expects councils to evaluate new proposals for these critical infrastructure constructively, and has pledged to revise guidelines to that end.

This follows the Chancellor's recent commitment of £32.5 million to improve HGV driver amenities throughout the UK, which will raise standards of roadside parking and facilities for our hauliers while also ensuring driver wellness, comfort, and safety.
