The Grade I listed building opened in 1838 as a terminus for the London & Birmingham Railway Company line that connected to Euston.
Over the next 12 months it will undergo intricate refurbishment by specialist contractor KN Circet, with a new steel structural frame needed to strengthen the building alongside repairs to the roof and outer facade, internal fit out and a full cleaning of the external masonry.
“The revamped building is integrated into HS2’s plans for the city’s landmark Curzon Street Station, which will be the first brand new intercity terminus station built in Britain since the 19th century,” said High Speed 2 project manager Russell Bailey.
New public space surrounding the old station building is set to feature the historic track alignments of a former goods yard that used to lie to its east. Gardens and a new eastern concourse facade have also been designed to complement the architecture of the building.
A feature on railway station architecture and design is contained in the new September issue of Transportation Professional, available to read now in the CIHT Members’ Area of this website.
Elsewhere in the Midlands, three organisations were shortlisted for a £370M contract to build High Speed 2’s new Interchange station near Solihull last week.
Laing O’Rourke Construction, Skanska Construction UK and Unity – a joint venture between Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick, supported by WSP – will be invited to tender for the contract which is due to be awarded next year.
