A new zebra crossing in Portsmouth is the first of kind and illuminates the road as pedestrians’ approach.

The new crossing is the first to benefit from a new lighting system that has been developed by Colas and is aimed at improving road safety. On the junction of Clarendon Road and Palmerston Road LED panels have been installed in the road surface making it more visible to drivers and encouraging increased use at night.
Councillor Lynne Stagg, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Traffic & Transportation, said:
"We’re always looking for new ways to improve road safety and I’m delighted we’re the first place in the UK to use this innovative new technology. We chose this crossing because it’s very busy particularly at night with all the bars and restaurants, we want to make the crossing more visible and encourage more people to cross there safely.”
Now that the crossing is in place, the site will be closely monitored to see if it makes a positive difference with the potential for more lights being added if so. The scheme makes up part of the Portsmouth City Council’s work to improve road safety and increase walking and cycling.
