The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) is supporting International Women’s Day on 8 March 2020 and encouraging more women to pursue a career within highways and transportation and apply for professional qualifications.
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Sue Percy CBE, Chief Executive, CIHT said:
"We are proud to celebrate International Women's Day and CIHT has been taking the industry lead on encouraging and supporting more women to take up and continue their careers in highways and transportation."
"We have collected a number of case studies that highlight the fantastic work being done by our female members. Their stories are inspirational and we plan to develop more activity to support these future leaders of our profession."
Through our Journeys campaign, CIHT has published case studies of the exciting job roles our members undertake. You can read about female CIHT members working in the highways and transportation sector, all at different stages in their careers here.
CIHT will be celebrating women in transportation and International Women in Engineering Day 2020 by running an online social media campaign.

CIHT’s Diversity & Inclusion toolkit is the first of its kind for the highways and transportation sector. It provides a route map to success through diversity and inclusion.
The toolkit offers practical guidance, case studies and links to reliable sources of expert advice for employers to help recruit, retain and develop a more diverse workforce. By doing so, employers will improve their own business performance and increase capacity within the industry.
Around 60 public and private sector organisations have signed the CIHT Diversity & Inclusion Charter to show their commitment to creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
Signatories to the Charter believe that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential to reflect the communities we serve. A more diverse workforce makes good business sense as it helps organisations attract and retain the best talent, enables them to understand and meet clients’ needs more effectively and so provide a better quality service.
Sue Percy, CBE, Chief Executive, CIHT said:
“CIHT strives to encourage best practice in staff recruitment, retention and career development across our sector. As part of this activity, we collect and share practical examples that help our members and stakeholders make progress on diversity and inclusion within their own organisations.
“We work together to develop and adopt future protocols and practice that support the implementation of the aims of this Charter. We recognise, respect, capitalise and celebrate contributions from different people to strengthen team performance.”
International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.
International Women's Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.
