It urges leaders to introduce ‘Vision Zero’ road safety targets and calls for 20mph to be the default speed limit in built up areas. It also wants to see pedestrian crossings installed at every signalised junction and for a new Child Friendly Streets Fund to curb rat running.
New statistics released by the charity to coincide with its ‘National Walking Month’ in May show that three quarters of people polled say they will continue walking as lockdown restrictions ease to maintain their physical health and just over half to maintain their mental health.
But only a third said they would keep walking to reduce their carbon footprint, 27% to help cut air pollution and 22% to reduce traffic.
Also this week Cycling UK has announced plans for a 240km off road route starting and ending in Penzance, Cornwall, to launch in September. The route, called the West Kernow Way, is designed to be ridden over three to four days and will pass landmarks including Botallack tin mines, Land’s End, St Michael’s Mount and Lizard Point.
“The benefit of cycling off road along the West Kernow Way is that you will steer clear of the crowds, and be able to visit the sites and find the hidden gems of Cornwall, all without filling the lanes with another car,” said campaigns officer Sophie Gordon.
Over the next two years Cycling UK intends to launch further new off road routes in Norfolk and Kent.
