Before being appointed to his new role Michael Gove was formerly Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from July 2019 to September 2021. He was also Minister for the Cabinet Office from February 2020 to September 2021. He was Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from June 2017 to July 2019.

Working alongside Michael Gove, Kemi Badenoch has been appointed Minister of State and Neil O' Brien has been appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

In his new role Michael Gove will amongst other things be responsible for overseeing the government's levelling up agenda and the new planning bill. CIHT have been advocating the need for better integration of planning and transport for years. In 2019 Better Planning, Better Transport, Better Places was published, and looked at creating a more sustainable approach into transport, planning and creating better places. The document was a joint effort between CIHT, the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Transport Planning Society.

Within the Department for Transport (DfT), Trudy Harrison, MP for Copeland, has been appointed parliamentary under-secretary of state and replaces Rachel Maclean, who has moved to the Home Office.
