The new study, Building Car Dependency, examines 20 new housing developments across England to find out if they are built around sustainable transport, or the car. Many of these sites had been examined in Transport for New homes Flagship 2018 report and were found to be car reliant but were told things would improve.
However, these developments provided little example of green, walkable, sustainable developments that encouraged sustainable ways of travelling that the Government envisages. Instead, new greenfield developments are more car-based than ever with this trend influencing other surrounding areas with out-of-town retail and leisure commonplace.
Some of the main takeaways from this new report included:
Jenny Raggett, Project Coordinator at Transport for New Homes, said:
At a time of climate emergency and with a need to cut congestion on our roads, this is not the way we should be building for the future. We have to draw the line and do things differently.
In the publication, Better Planning, Better Transport, Better Places, CIHT stated the need for the better integration of the land-use and transport planning systems to achieve sustainable developments that are fit for the future.
The current planning practice is not delivering the best outcomes. New developments frequently fail to achieve sustainability because of their locations, the approaches taken to provide access, or the attitudes of everyone involved in their planning and delivery. Far too many examples still exist where the long since discredited approach of ‘predict and provide’ is used to the detriment of planning better places.
The CIHT sees this as a key issue and is a critical component of the wider climate agenda.
