Peninsula Transport adds that road emissions throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset will likely fall short of reaching net zero by 2050. It also says that Covid’s impact could lead to 78,000 additional car trips a day in the region if passengers do not return to public transport.
These statistics are highlighted within the sub national body’s new ‘vision’ to improve transport which is out for consultation, ahead of the publication of a full regional transport strategy next year.
Seven technical studies will be delivered over the next 12 months to support the transport strategy. These include a carbon transition strategy, another looking at technology and electric vehicles and others covering rail, freight and rural mobility.
Stated ambitions for the region include delivering affordable, zero emissions transport for everyone, improving the health and wellbeing of local communities and enhancing connections between people, places and businesses.
“Our vision is to enhance our transport system,” said Peninsula Transport chair Andrea Davis, a county councillor from Devon. “We want more efficient, resilient and cleaner transport that can help make the peninsula even better. With climate change and decarbonisation at the forefront of our agenda, it’s important that transport is fit for the future.”
