This comes after the UK Parliament approved a bill in June 2019 pledging to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The strategy, as predicted, is an all-encompassing plan that expands on the Prime Minister's Ten-Point Plan, which was released in November 2020.

By 2030, the pledges will have unlocked up to £90 billion in private investment and supported 440,000 well-paid jobs in green sectors.

The Net Zero Strategy involves the following:

  • An additional £350 million for transportation electrification and £620 million for EV incentives and infrastructure, including local on-street home charge stations.
  • The objective is to allow the delivery of 10% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030 and to provide £180 million in additional funding for future SAF facilities.
  • A £140 million Industrial and Hydrogen Revenue Support programme is being launched to help businesses speed their carbon capture and hydrogen production.
  • An additional £500 million will be allocated to innovation initiatives aimed at developing breakthrough green technology.
  • Nearly £3.9 billion in additional investment for decarbonising heat and buildings, including the £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which will run for three years.
  • A £124 million boost to the Nature for Climate Fund will assist the UK fulfil its pledges to restore roughly 280,000 hectares of peat in England by 2050 and triple forest production in England by the end of this parliament.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The UK’s path to ending our contribution to climate change will be paved with well-paid jobs, billions in investment and thriving green industries – powering our green industrial revolution across the country.”

“By moving first and taking bold action, we will build a defining competitive edge in electric vehicles, offshore wind, carbon capture technology and more, whilst supporting people and businesses along the way.”
