2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), when CIHT will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations recognising the contribution volunteers make across the UK. With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we hope to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.
The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, so taking the time during Volunteers’ Week to celebrate their efforts and all they contribute to our sector has never been more important.
If you want to get the most out of your membership, raise your profile and support the sector you can also become a CIHT Volunteer.
Figuring out where to start can be overwhelming, but there are lots of resources to help you find the right opportunity:
Becoming a CIHT Regional Committee member can expand your network with leading professionals in your area and will help you stand out from the crowd. Joining your committee also counts towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and can lead to longer involvement in national CIHT activities. It is the first step for those who wish to become a key figure in the institution or even a future CIHT President.
Are you a CIHT Fellow and want to get more involved with CIHT? Now is your chance!
CIHT’s Committees and Panels are our window into the profession. They represent the views of highways and transportation professionals, lending their expertise and knowledge to ensure that our work reflects the issues that matter most to our members.
We are looking for CIHT Fellows to join our Membership Application Panel (MAP) and ensure the future direction of the sector is in safe hands and that the contribution of its members are recognised.
Becoming a CIHT STEM Ambassador has never been easier. As a CIHT STEM Ambassador, you are required to undertake a minimum of one activity each year.
STEM Ambassadors and the activities they undertake are crucial to the development of and inspiring the next generation to get involved in the industry and make a lasting difference. CIHT Stem Ambassadors inspire young people to continue studying STEM subjects and help them to explore the applications of their studies in the wider world.

Mentoring can be an incredibly rewarding experience and mentors can derive a great deal of satisfaction from contributing to the success of others. CIHT Mentors get to give something back to the highways and transportation sector and accelerate their own learning and development while building collaborative relationships. Mentoring counts as a CPD activity for CIHT members. Other benefits include:
CIHT Assessors and Reviewers volunteers, assess candidates who want to become professionally qualified. All new reviewers and assessors attend a training session, then they are required to observe three Professional Review or EPA interviews at an upcoming round of reviews. Once they have observed three interviews, they will have completed their training and will be invited to conduct reviews at the following round.
Technical Champions are a highly valued group of individuals who CIHT turn to for their opinions. By becoming a Technical Champion, you have the opportunity to join a network of leading voices in the sector, have your thoughts heard and share the work you are doing to provide better highways and transport systems.
If you would like to boost your CV, raise you and your company’s profile and have the opportunity to get more involved in CIHT events then this could be the volunteering opportunity for you.
Do you enjoy working with engaging and knowledgeable professionals from a diverse mix of backgrounds and disciplines? Do you see Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as crucial to ensuring CIHT members have the skills and knowledge they need to address the challenges facing the sector? If so, why not apply to join CIHTs CPD panel and support CIHT’s annual CPD review and approval process.
