CIHT will be responding to Skills England’s Skills for Work request for feedback and is inviting members to contribute their views. The consultation is considering how occupational standards and the apprenticeships, qualifications and other skills products they underpin can remain fit for the future, meet employer needs and support good jobs, careers, economic growth and devolution.

The consultation is directly relevant to the highways and transportation sector. It asks whether occupational standards reflect the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed by employers and the economy, how they can support local and regional skills priorities, and how they should respond to changes including artificial intelligence, automation, new technologies and net zero.

What we would like to hear from members

•          How well current occupational standards and skills products support entry into, and progression within, highways and transportation careers.
•          Where occupational standards or provision do not fully meet employer and workforce needs.
•          How standards can remain nationally consistent while reflecting local and regional priorities.
•         How emerging technologies, automation, artificial intelligence and net zero are changing the skills required across the sector.
•         Examples, evidence or practical experience that should inform CIHT’s response.

CIHT members are encouraged to send their views, supporting evidence and examples to CIHT so they can be considered in the Institution’s response. Members do not need to comment on every consultation question and may focus on the issues most relevant to their professional experience.

Member insight will help CIHT represent the needs of the highways and transportation profession and support a skills system that is responsive, inclusive and ready for future workforce demands.
