The CIHT East Midlands awards are now open for submissions.

The deadline for entries is 23:59 on Friday 12th September 2025. 

The CIHT East Midlands celebrate the very best the region offers across the key areas of highways and transportation. They are open to everyone: members and non-members; small and large organisations; public, private and third sector. The Awards recognise the outstanding contribution that good projects and people make to our daily lives.

CIHT East Midlands Award Entries 2025

Project Information
Award Submission
Entries must clearly explain how the submission meets the criteria and must not exceed the 1,100 maximum word limit.
Entries may be accompanied by supporting material (e.g. illustrations, plans or results of monitoring studies.
Any videos must be sent with a link to be viewed at the judge’s discretion.
Entries may be accompanied by up to three letters of support. For example from a user, beneficiary or colleague.
The decision of the judges appointed by the Awards Panel will be final. No correspondence will be entered into with entrants concerning the decision of the judges on any matter associated with the CIHT East Midlands Awards 2025. The Awards Panel reserves the right to refuse or disqualify any entry for any reason it considers valid, and will not enter into any discussion or correspondence concerning the decision. All material submitted will be treated as available for publication in awards-related articles within press releases and promotional materials developed for the Awards, unless otherwise copyright protected.

Judging Criteria


 

Project of the Year Award

This award category celebrates innovative engineering solutions that overcome significant challenges in highways and transportation within the East Midlands. 

Entrants should focus on the implementation of new processes, activities, projects, or solutions that achieve demonstrable results. This includes the planning and delivery of new schemes, implementation of new technologies, changes in asset management strategies, research, collaboration programmes, positive sustainable action and outcomes for local communities, with exemplary case studies with positive measurable impact on the regional transport systems. 

Project of the Year Award Guidelines

Judging Criteria

  • Problem statement – 100 words
  • Innovative design and technical excellence (20%)
  • Evidence of problem-solving and overcoming constraints (20%)
  • Efficiency and sustainability of the solution (15%)
  • Demonstrated community impact and user benefits (15%)
  • Value for money and return on investment (15%)
  • Wider application potential and lessons learned (15%) 

 

Climate Action Award

This award category recognises projects or initiatives that demonstrate a significant contribution to mitigating climate change and reducing the carbon footprint in highways and transportation within the East Midlands region.  

Entrants should focus on the implementation of new processes, activities, projects, or solutions that achieve real and demonstratable results, this could include behaviour change programmes, collaboration programmes, positive sustainable action and outcomes for local communities, or climate research with exemplary and promising trials into viable real-world solutions. 

Climate Action Award Guidelines

Judging Criteria

  • Problem statement – 100 words
  • Approach taken in addressing climate change challenges (20%)
  • Evidence of carbon reduction and climate resilience measures (20%)
  • Environmental, economic, and social sustainability impact (15%)
  • Alignment with national and global climate action goals (15%)
  • Measurable outcomes, including community and user benefits (15%)
  • Potential for replicability and scalability (15%) 

 

Exceptional Emerging Talent Award

This award category honours individuals who live or work in / for the East Midlands region who demonstrate outstanding potential and contributions early in their career in the highways and transportation sector.

This award is open to CIHT members living or working in the East Midlands region only, and with a maximum of 5 years of experience in the highways and transportation sector. 

Entries from graduates, students (PhD, MSc and BSc levels) and apprentices are particularly encouraged. 

Exceptional Emerging Talent Award Guidelines 

Judging Criteria

  • Introduction (incl. nominee’s details and membership number) – 100 words
  • Evidence of technical skills and innovation in their work (20%)
  • Leadership and initiative shown in projects or tasks (20%)
  • Contribution to advancing sustainability, safety, or efficiency (15%)
  • Collaboration and teamwork abilities (15%)
  • Positive impact on the organisation or community (15%)
  • Testimonials or references from colleagues or mentors (15%) 

 

Road Safety Award

The Road Safety Award recognises projects, initiatives, or technologies that significantly improve road safety in the East Midlands region.  

With a focus on working towards zero death and serious injury on our road networks, this award welcomes entrants from both industry and academic institutions. Entrants should focus on making the highway network a safer place through the implementation of new processes, activities, projects, or solutions that achieve real and demonstratable results. This could include positive safe and sustainable action and outcomes for local communities, schemes or projects initiating the application of a safe system approach. Schemes or products that contribute to casualty reduction are welcomed for this award. 

Road Safety Award Guidelines

Judging Criteria

  • Problem statement – 100 words
  • Evidence of safety improvements and risk reduction (20%)
  • Innovation in design or implementation of safety measures (20%)
  • Measurable outcomes such as collision or injury reduction (15%)
  • Engagement with users and stakeholders (15%) 
  • Value for money and long-term safety benefits (10%)
  • Alignment with local or national road safety strategies (10%) 
  • Scalability or potential for broader application (10%)  

 

Transport Planning Award

This award acknowledges innovative and effective transport planning initiatives that contribute to improved mobility and connectivity in the East Midlands. 

The award recognises the value of transport planning in achieving positive outcomes for the benefit of the public, in creating new communities and benefiting both the community's safety and the local environment to reduce adverse impacts of transport on communities. Your entry will be judged on both the qualitative and quantitative impact and it will be important that you cover the design, use, and safety of the scheme.  

Transport Planning Award Guidelines

  • Problem statement – 100 words
  • Quality and effectiveness of the transport planning process (20%)
  • Innovation in addressing challenges or opportunities (20%)
  • Evidence of sustainability and environmental considerations (15%)
  • Achieved or anticipated outcomes and community benefits (15%) 
  • Stakeholder and community engagement (10%)
  • Integration with wider transport strategies and policies (10%)
  • Scalability and replicability of the initiative (10%) 

 

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Award

This award category recognises the merit of CIHT Members, including employers and individuals, that have promoted, been involved, or implemented an Equality, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) initiative in the East Midlands, establishing themselves as a positive role model for the sector. Organisation and/or individuals, working in highways or transportation in a public, private or voluntary capacity in the East Midlands region can nominate themselves or be nominated.

  • Stakeholder engagement (10%)
  • Addressing of the EDI challenge (25%)
  • Impact on society (20%)

Women's Achievement Award

CIHT East Midlands Committee is proud to promote this Award category which will celebrate and showcase women’s achievements in the highways and transportation sector in the East Midlands region. 

This Award recognises all the remarkable women who are carrying out outstanding work in the field of highways and transportation not just on projects but overall, shaping the lives around us. 

Women's Achievement Award Guidelines

Judging Criteria

  • Highways and Transportation Industry: Describe the nominee's contributions and their positive impact on the industry. Consider innovations, improvements, or significant projects they have been involved in. (20%)
  • Values and Behaviour: Describe the values and behaviours that the nominee exhibits which make them stand out. Consider qualities such as integrity, dedication, innovation, collaboration, and leadership (20%)
  • Influence In Your Organisation: Explain how the nominee has positively influenced your organisation. This could include leadership, teamwork, project success, or other notable contributions. (20%)
  • Additional Positive Impacts: Highlight any additional positive impacts the nominee has made in other areas, such as community involvement, environmental sustainability, or industry advocacy (20%)
  • Reasons for Shortlisting: Explain why you believe the nominee should be shortlisted for their achievements in the highways and transportation sector. Focus on their standout accomplishments, the significance of their contributions, and the overall impact of their work. (20%)
