Job description

Are you an experienced engineer looking for a new challenge within a dynamic and supportive organisation? West Berkshire Council is seeking a Senior Engineer to join our Highways Team, reporting to the Principal Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the delivery of highway engineering services and make a positive impact on the local community. 

The Role

As a Senior Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the Principal Engineer in the management and delivery of highway engineering projects and services. Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Leading the design, contract management and implementation of highway infrastructure projects
  • Conducting feasibility studies, site assessments, and engineering surveys
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to internal teams, external stakeholders, and the public
  • Managing contracts and liaising with contractors to ensure successful project delivery
  • Lead designer on schemes using AutoCAD and other related highways software
  • Monitoring and reporting on project progress, budgets, and resources
  • Collaborating with other departments and organisations to achieve shared objectives 

In addition to the above responsibilities, you will also have the opportunity to mentor and support junior engineers and technicians, fostering their professional development. 


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and attributes: 

  • Proven experience working in a similar engineering role, ideally within a local authority environment
  • Sound knowledge of transport engineering principles, practices, and legislation
  • Strong technical skills in design, analysis, and problem-solving
  • Extensive AutoCAD experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders
  • Organised and self-motivated, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver projects within deadlines
  • Team player with a collaborative approach, as well as the ability to work independently 

A relevant engineering qualification (e.g. HNC, degree) and membership of a professional engineering institution (e.g. IET, ICE) are desirable.
