Achieving the TPP qualification may be more straightforward than you think. 

The TPP qualification has been designed to provide professional recognition for transport planners in the same way that Chartered Engineer recognises the highest level of engineering competence. It is awarded by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Transport Planning Society (TPS). You must be a member of CIHT or the TPS to apply.

Becoming Qualified

In order to achieve TPP registration, you must:

  • Be a member of CIHT or TPS.
  • Provide evidence that you have achieved an appropriate level of learning, either through the attainment of formal qualifications and/or structured vocational training, or through submission of a report which demonstrates achievement of the learning outcomes to the satisfaction of CIHT and TPS.
  • Demonstrate competence across a broad range of transport planning procedures and managerial techniques.
  • Have practical experience in transport planning and have been engaged on a variety of transport planning projects to demonstrate the breadth and depth of competence required for the TPP qualification.
  • Be able to show that you have undertaken a minimum of 25 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) a year for at least two years prior to making your TPP application.

You are likely to need at least five years’ experience in transport planning and to have been engaged on a variety of transport planning projects to demonstrate the breadth and depth of competence required to gain the qualification.
