With national lockdowns due to the pandemic, public transport usage seen an overnight decline to little, or is some cases no travellers at all. With restrictions gone for the most part, public transport is struggling to get its ridership back up to previous levels.
Since March 2020, the Department for Transport has released daily usage rates of different transport modes in the UK against pre-pandemic levels. It reveals an interesting picture and provides a broad overview of how we have travelled over the past 2 years and how it has changed.
Before the nation-wide lockdown, bus and rail use was high with many services being over capacity. Now we see a different picture, with many of the services running at half capacity or less, and during the middle of the first lockdown in 2020 services were running at a capacity of as low as 4%.
Despite this, public transport did look to be in recovery with National Rail reaching highs of 72% usage levels;
