This year the listing for the CIHT Awards was run through a series of digital events. The Supporting One Another, Innovation and Shaping the Future digital events have revealed an exciting list of projects that have been put forward to take part in the final on the 23 June.

Shortlisted for 2020

Shaping the Future

Shaping the Future is about the delivery of the visions we have for our physical environments and transport networks. It is about sustainable transport, infrastructure and placemaking. It is about how you plan, design and build transport networks for everyone.

Projects shortlisted below are examples of the type of infrastructure we should be building as the sector is charged with delivering a green restart from the COVID-19 crisis, both in terms of design and use of materials.


CIHT / Ringway Climate Change Award

This award recognises projects or strategies by the highways and transportation industry that demonstrate a contribution to sustainable working practices, address climate change and creates environmental benefits with a global or local impact.

  • Connect Plus Services - State of the art thin surface course trials on the Strategic Road Network (SRN) containing 50% reclaimed asphalt
  • Skanska Infrastructure Services - Skanska Infrastructure Services low carbon strategy
  • Go-Ahead London - The Waterloo Revolution
  • Jackson Civil Engineering, Connect Plus, Axtell & DB Group - Ultra-low Carbon Concrete Pilot on the M25
  • London Borough of Islington - Bunhill 2: Using waste heat for homes

CIHT / City Science Healthy Transport Award

This award recognises the contribution of transport to the health of the population.

  • Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames - Go Cycle Kingston Town Centre    
  • Shropshire Council - Shropshire Daily Mile Tracks    
  • Solihull MBC with Solihull School Streets        
  • Sustrans - New Malden to Raynes Park Link     
  • Transport for London - Mini-Hollands Programme
  • Waltham Forest Council with Enjoy Waltham Forest

CIHT Creating Better Places Award

This award recognises how outstanding design and implementation of schemes in towns and cities improve the places around them.

  • London Borough of Waltham Forest with Lea Bridge Road, Waltham Forest
  • London Highways Alliance for Highbury Corner, London    
  • Sheffield City Council - Charter Square
  • Warwickshire County Council - Northgate Scheme

CIHT Transport Planning Award

This award recognises the value of transport planning in achieving positive outcomes for the benefit of the public, in creating new communities or on reducing the adverse impact of transport on communities.

  • Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow - FIFA World Cup transport logistics
  • Nottinghamshire County Council, AECOM and ITP - Travel Choice    
  • SEGRO & ITP - SEGRO Logistics Park East Midands Gateway
  • Transport for the North - Transport for the North - Strategic Transport Plan
  • Transport for West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and Midland Metro Association - Five Ways Underpass Closure

This award recognises exceptional engineering solutions in the highways and transportation sector that have delivered creative and resilient solutions.

CIHT / Amey Innovation of the Year Award

This award recognises innovation in the industry, this could be in terms of research, technology, products, processes and services that have impacted the organisation, company or industry positively.

CIHT International Project Award

This award recognises outstanding examples of highways and transportation infrastructure or services from outside the UK and Ireland.

CIHT / Kier Road Safety Award

The Road Safety Award, in memory of John Smart, recognises outstanding achievements which improve road user safety through excellent practice, design and technical application.
